What is a BIN?

A Bank Identification Number (BIN), also known as Issuer Identification Number (IIN), is the first 6-8 digits of a payment card number. These digits identify:

  • The card brand (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc.)
  • The issuing bank or financial institution
  • The card type (Credit, Debit, Prepaid)
  • The card level (Classic, Gold, Platinum, etc.)
  • The country of issuance
Example: In card number 5401 31XX XXXX XXXX, the BIN is 540131

Card Types

Credit

Allows borrowing money from the issuer up to a credit limit. Payment is due at end of billing cycle.

Debit

Directly linked to a bank account. Funds are deducted immediately from the account.

Prepaid

Pre-loaded with a specific amount. Not linked to a bank account or credit line.

Is BIN Scanner free to use?

Yes, BIN Scanner is completely free for both web interface and API access.

How accurate is the data?

Our database contains over 370,000 BIN records and is regularly updated. Accuracy is typically above 95%.

Is this legal?

Yes. BIN information is not considered sensitive data. It's publicly available and used for fraud prevention, payment routing, and analytics.

Do you store card numbers?

No. We only process the first 6-8 digits (BIN) and do not store full card numbers. No personal data is collected.

What are the rate limits?

The API allows 60 requests per minute per IP address. Contact us if you need higher limits.
